What ICT actually is

ICT — short for Inner Circle Trader — is a framework for reading charts the way institutions read them: as a hunt for liquidity, not a search for chart patterns. Stop hunts, breaker blocks, fair value gaps, and order blocks all describe the same underlying truth — big money needs counter-orders to fill its positions, so it engineers liquidity before reversing.

The 5 pillars of ICT

  1. Liquidity — Stops above old highs (buy-side) and below old lows (sell-side). Price gravitates here.
  2. Market structure — Higher highs / higher lows for bullish, opposite for bearish. A break of structure (BOS) confirms continuation; a change of character (CHoCH) hints at reversal.
  3. Fair Value Gaps (FVG) — A 3-candle imbalance where the middle candle leaves a gap. Price often returns to fill it.
  4. Order blocks (OB) — The last opposing candle before a strong move; institutions left orders there.
  5. Optimal Trade Entry (OTE) — The 0.62–0.79 Fibonacci retracement of an impulsive leg; ICT''s sniper entry zone.

How to apply ICT to gold

  • On the 4H, identify the dominant draw on liquidity — which old high or low is price likely to raid next?
  • On the 1H, find the bullish or bearish order block in the direction of the 4H draw.
  • On the 15M, wait for a CHoCH inside the OB, then enter on a return to an FVG or OTE.
  • Stop loss: just beyond the OB extreme. Target: the opposing liquidity pool.

  • London killzone: 07:00–10:00 UTC
  • New York AM killzone: 12:30–15:00 UTC
  • New York PM reversal: 18:00–20:00 UTC

Trading outside killzones drastically lowers your edge.

Common ICT mistakes

  • Trading every order block (only OBs at HTF liquidity matter).
  • Ignoring the macro context (DXY, yields, news).
